The
Dog and the Dogfish
One
day, as a dog merrily paddled through a river, he came face to
face with a dogfish. Shocked, the dog scrambled out of the water.
"What's wrong?" asked a cat who was scrounging on the
bank.
"Stay
away from that river," the dog said, shivering. "If
you stay in there too long, you will turn into a fish."
"That
is preposterous," the cat said.
"No,
I saw it with my own eyes," the dog said.
They
argued for several minutes, but the dog was stubborn and determined
to prove himself correct. He grabbed the cat and tossed him in
the river. The cat tried swimming to safety, but the dog forced
him to stay in the water. Eventually, a strong current caught
the cat and carried him away. The dog raced down the riverbank,
but he lost track of the cat, which grabbed some brush, pulled
himself to the bank, and ran away.
Then
the dog came to the end of the river where there was a large
pool. "The cat must be in here," he thought to himself.
Cautiously, the dog jumped in and out of the river. He searched
and searched, splashing in all directions, until an annoyed catfish
emerged from the depths. Spotting the catfish, the dog exclaimed,
"See, I was right after all!"
