The Invisibles
One day a man looked out his bay window and
saw four people in his yard. They were gesturing with their hands
like they were grabbing something above them. He watched them
for a while, and then he walked outside. "What are you doing?"
he asked.
"We are just picking apples off your
tree," a woman replied. "I hope you don't mind."
"Is this a joke?" the man asked.
"There is no apple tree here."
"Well, if you can't see it, then I don't
know what to say," the woman said.
The man paused. "All right, just get
out of here. Get off my property now," he said. The people
looked at him quizzically, and then quietly left.
The next day, as the man was doing yard work,
he looked down the street and saw the four people behaving the
same way in his neighbor's yard, while his neighbor was playing
an invisible guitar. Day after day, the man watched as more people
went to his neighbor's house. They picked invisible fruit, played
invisible instruments, cooked invisible delicacies, and enjoyed
invisible games. As the crowd grew and grew, the man knew he
was missing out on a wonderful party.
